The World Congress on Specialized Translation: Languages and Intercultural Dialogue in a Globalizing World, is convened by the MAAYA Network and the Unión Latina, as part of the activities of “2008, The International Year of Languages”, with the aim of highlighting the importance of specialized translation as a guarantee of multilingualism and as a shield against any attempts to impose a hegemonic monolingual dialogue.

Information sciences, the Internet and translators: efficacy and efficiency
“Translation is too expensive and too slow,” or the lies behind monolingualism
Translation in international organizations, patents and norms
The translator in dialogue with editors and producers of audiovisual material

What about our Cuban colleagues who will have access to an international event that they would not be able to attend were it held in another country? Also note the double-tier pricing to make it (somewhat more) affordable for Cubans to attend.
I'm not affiliated with this event but it seems to me that if there is a political argument to be made for not attending this event then there is equal political reasoning for attending this event. ...just my two cents ... I find it quite friendly from Yolanda to inform her translator colleagues about this event. Whether one wants to attend it because it takes place in Cuba, is every one's own decision. I can understand the points made by Tomas, Luisa, and especially Yuri with his personal experience from the former Soviet Union, but I think the event in itself can be interesting, from the professional point of view. And with Lynda, I would like seeing it work both ways (although I know it's not as easy as that).<... Besides, the International Federation of Translators will hold their World Congress 2008 in Shanghai/China.

Since the forum is not for political discussions, I won't go deeper into that, but I just wonder: the same objections against events in non-democratic countries should then be valid for this event in China, shouldn't they?
On the other hand, everything changes so quickly nowadays, and the need for information is growing in all parts of the world, so this could also be a reasion why professional conferences are not always held in "established" countries of the western-democratic type. ▲ Collapse

I aboslutely respect the decision of anyone who does not want to legitimize a dictatorship.
I have, however, worked with many Cubans over the years (here and in Cuba), in academics and as a translator, and while I am very aware of the lack of rights for citizens, I can also tell you that my colleagues travel, and did so even as students (when I met them) to int'l conferences, stayed with me, as I did with them, have been e-mailing me for years (so there is some access to Internet, a... The fact that the congress is organized by the Union Latina , a well known international institution, is a garantee of the seriousness of the event. A couple of years ago (well, little bit more), I went to a Congress that took place at Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, Argentina, also organized by Union Latina. It convoked high level terminologists of all the Spanish speaking countries. I think that to attend there will be worthwhile.
I believe a moderator should take note ... The seriousness of the event and the organization are not in question and every organization should be free to hold their events any place they deem convenient or appropriate. We were just voicing our opinion.
I have been asked to edit the last paragraph of my first entry. The forum does not allow editing after 24 hours. I have authorized the moderator to edit it or delete it. I recently had a nauseating experience at another translators' site. I apologize for getting carried away and infringing Proz's rules about political opinions which, if in place overthere, would have prevented that from happening.

I was just going to say the same.
All kind of International Congresses and Conferences and Symposiums organized by the most "respectable" scientific or academic organizations in the world are being held in Cuba.
Besides, I think a moderator should have edited or deleted immediatley the posts that violated the rules, as it usally happens in other fora.
I remember some time ago when Pinochet died, a collegue just announced the fact without the name. Nobody even dare say the word "dictator" because "it violated the rules". Others undertsood anyway, read bewteen the lines and celebrated.
But somebody mentioned the forbidden word: the dead man was Pinochet. And another member even stated that Pinochet was a "criminal". Several posts were DELETED, including mine. And the thread was frozen. All in not more than 30 minutes. And that because they were only giving news that could be found any place, radio, TV, at that moment.
In this thread, however, it`s very clear that political opinions are being given and allowed.
I assumed rules go both ways. Or don`t they here?
PS: I am not sure how long this post will survive. It might be deleted in a few minutes, so read it before it vanishes.
