I would say "Yes", and preferably if it's one of myself, instead of a thing, a baby or an animal, but how can I know? I think it's for outsources to reply to this question and see if they do. | | | Diana Arbiser United States Local time: 10:39 English to Spanish + ... How about "I don't know"? | Sep 18, 2008 |
Honestly I haven't got a clue... My picture is there, but who knows what the outsourcer is looking for
It certainly does not hurt to have a picture there. That alone shows that you put some effort in building up your profile and your image, which is very important in terms of marketing.

I prefer "mugshot" | Sep 18, 2008 |
Like Diana, I believe there should be "I don't know" option in this poll. I believe having a picture of oneself gives a personal touch more than those of some abstract stuff or that of one's own pet that may or may not reflect the translators' personal taste. At least "mugshot" is more objective. Yet, as she said we never know what the oursourcers out there looking. I hope having picutre sways their decision in my favor, but that's not always the case. Besides there are few cases in which outsourcers already know whom to assign the job, but it is there in the job announcement. In a nutshell, picture may or may not help us. ▲ Collapse | | | I think it's not the worst idea | Sep 18, 2008 |
to add a face to the profile, all the more as we seldom meet one another in person. It helps me remember people better for sure. | | | Sofia Lima Portugal Local time: 17:39 English to Portuguese + ... I don't think so | Sep 18, 2008 |
I don't think so. Why should a picture matter when one has comproved experience and clients's credentials? I agree that updating the profile shows interess by the professional, but it shouldn't be determinant in the selection process. | | | Agre with those who said "I don't know" | Sep 18, 2008 |
Except I would modify it as "I don't know for sure, but I hope it does". Same as "probably"? Well, yes - but more explicit.

I think for those who photograph nicely, a photo can add appeal to the profile, but I would never personally have my photo posted. I don't want it to matter and I think that if I had a photo, it would decrease rather than increase my chances of being contacted for business. | | | Not really matter, that is too much said. | Sep 18, 2008 |
It is just that our faces are as much a part of us as is our expertise, and we are somewhat artificially isolated working over the internet. I don't think it could be harmful to look at one another from time to time, and I don't refer solely to the clients although they were the question's focus. A picture's got more of a person than a mere name, that's all. I wouldn't overvalue the matter, either. (Unlike some weirdos who only assign jobs to people with photos... The old saying: "An image is worth more than a thousand words", is sufficiently eloquent. | | | D BANNON Local time: 12:39 Korean to English + ... Native Speaker | Sep 19, 2008 |
Only two clients have ever mentioned the photo. However, both clients were specifically seeking a native English speaker. Although there are certainly many Korean-Americans raised in the US that are native speakers, in the case of these two clients, the photo quickly communicated the "native speaker" status they sought. Pictures can be different | Sep 19, 2008 |
I first voted for "Yes", but my 2nd thought now would be that it all depends on what kind of picture you have inserted into your profile. Some profiles here have pictures (photos) where I strongly believe they were taken after a 7 hour's session in the pub or after a party night on the beach - I don't think that such pictures are very suitable to attract potential clients. In such cases it would be a better idea to leave the photo away completely or use a logo instead. | | | inkweaver Germany Local time: 18:39 French to German + ...
Well, Sonja, perhaps you know the saying "everyone's entiteled to their own opinion", but this doesn't hold true for Germany, I know... I think that we are free to discuss our opinions in this forum and I don't see why me and some others should be called "weirdos" for voicing our opinion, in this case that we find it ridiculous to explicitly ask for a photo when looking for a translator. Perhaps you should choose your words a bit more carefully when referring to others. | | | With "weirdos", I was | Sep 19, 2008 |
referring to the people who asked for the photo, not to those who found that weird. I hadn't thought this could be confounded. I'm sorry! Edit: Thank you for making me aware that my comment can be understood that way (*eek)... I have adapted it accordingly.
