40's -- second time though Jan 12, 2009

I started to get a PhD in my twenties with the idea that I'd end up doing literary translation, left with just the M.A. for financial reasons, did lots of other things and then went back in my forties and got a translation certificate and agency experience as a practical measure -- lets me work where I want. I'd almost forgotten that I ever wanted to translate early on, and then I came across a bunch of notebooks, etc., from those early studies in Comp. Lit. Kind of a long, circuitous route.

I started my university degree in translation immediately after finishing high school. This was also when I started working as a freelance translator. However, I usually consider that my actual "professional" career began when I graduated, in 1992. I was then in my 20s.
In any case, I've been in this business for a very long time and have no intentions of quitting any time soon.
Have a great day!

I had a gap in between Jan 12, 2009

I started when I was in my 30s, and then stuffed a journalism career in the middle...went back to translation later on, in my 50s.

I think that I wouldn't be so happy after more than 20 years in the translation business if these great new tools hadn't been developed.

The freelance translator's job has been constantly evolving since the day I began, and now has very little to do with what I did in the 80s (I remember all those endless hours spent at the library!!).

I guess this is what has kept it interesting for me.

Regards from Montevideo!

... after several years TEFL. When I graduated with a degree in Russian in the 80s, the only real openings in UK for translators were in the civil service, which I didn't fancy...

I must have been 24 or so.. Jan 13, 2009

Hi! And they used to keep on asking me for services, and they had an inofficial office in our backyard. It took me some time due to the repeat of the service to understand that it was about translation. They used to throw out great parties though. BR Brandis
