I'd even pay a surplus fee if I could view the site without any ads. First they send us SDLX-announcement via email and on top of that spoil the frontpage with a huge banner. Those banners should be shown to non paying members only.

Email from ProZ.com? Apr 23, 2004

Hi,

I haven't received any email from ProZ.com about SDLX. I believe that if you got it, you got it directly from SDL. Have you subscribed their newsletter?

Please see

http://www.proz.com/?sp=info/advert

ProZ.com has earned the respect and trust of its members by featuring advertising from only the most relevant and professional sources, showing it in limited amounts, and avoiding the use of annoying advertising formats. The result is a platform for product advertisement that is more effective than any other channel. Facts:

ProZ.com is the most visited site in the translation industry* (Up to 250,000 page views/day)

Three times more people visit ProZ.com in a single day (Up to 5000) than attend the leading offline translation event

No online or offline publication reaches more translators than the ProZ.com newsletter

ProZ.com has been used more than any other translation product or service (74651+ registrations)

ProZ.com's reach is not only remote; face-to-face meetings are held in more than 30 countries.

Since ProZ.com's promotional efforts have never been focused on one region over another, ProZ.com's demographic reflects the global translation industry.

ProZ.com advertising has resulted in product sales of up to $10,000/day.

ProZ.com has been used by almost every major translation software vendor, including TRADOS, SDL, Atril, Cypresoft, MultiCorpora, MetaTexis, PractiCount and more.

To learn more about the advertising packages now available at ProZ.com, click on the "package deals" tab above.

I receive regularly emails from SDL, but only because I chose so.

Advertising is a source of income for the site, used together with Platinum memberships for keeping the site running, even for non-paying members.

BTW, you could also advertise your services with ProZ.com advertising.

Giuliana

Do not see anything wrong with CAT tools ads Apr 23, 2004

Dear Heinrich Pesch,
I would be worried if the banners here on ProZ.com were about some Sleepwear Sales, but it they are about CAT tools which we, translators use, why not?

I actually appreciate it when ProZ.com notifies us regarding new releases. That means that I do not have to spend my time somewhere else to check when the next version of XX tool would be released...

fortunately I have a large sreen Apr 23, 2004

but on a laptop I would see only the banners. On the internet it's a custom that when you are paying for a service you are free of advertisements. All these banners are a nuisance, most of all the animated ones (Trados).

Functionality we've been dreaming about: that the website is even reachable? Apr 23, 2004

I do agree with you specifically about the SDLX ad. A bit over the top IMO. *Especially* considering that the website isn't even reachable! (At least not for me, for the past 2 days or however long the ad has been up). It doesn't make much sense to place a huge ad touting the "functionality we've been dreaming about for ages!" when connection to the SDLX website times out (or am I the only one having this problem?). Doesn't bode well IMO.

Disagree Apr 23, 2004

I definitely think it would be wrong to put a 'cold hand' on the decision if members should see ads or not.
One idea would be though to let every member, who wants to, to deselect ads.

That on the other hand might be detrimental to site economy, which is the least anyone may want.

I believe that few (less than 5% ?) would choose not to have ads that are related to translation.

Ad Blocking Apr 23, 2004

Norton Personal Firewall has a very effective "Ad Blocking" option. It works indiscriminately good.

Mats, I agree with you for the most part; advertising is OK in principle. I have no problem with the usual discreet ads for platinum membership and translators workbench and the like.

I think my problem (and perhaps Heinrich's as well) is with the overwhelming size and placement of the ad. Does a gigantic ad for SDLX (the link to which doesn't even work for me, as I mentioned above) really need to fill my entire screen when I load proz.com? This is after all the first thing visitors see when they visit. Is this the overwhelming message we want to send potential new members? Is this what I pay my platinum membership for?

Thumbs Up for Work Related Advertising! Apr 23, 2004

I'm quite happy to find the advertising on ProZ.com for work related products, which I might otherwise never get to know about!

Size does matter... Apr 23, 2004

I don't mind work-related ads, neither before nor after I started paying for ProZ. However, the current SDLX is way over the top IMO. An ad this big (functional for me, though) should be reserved for national emergencies.

I think Klaus is right with regard to the size of it. Far to big, in my opinion. Thanks to ads, though, we come to know about CAT, that we all use, and other interesting things. As, also, Vesna says, Norton is so good on blocking things like that.

Nothing against ads on free sites Apr 23, 2004

As I pointed out initially, I would gladly pay an extra fee if I could use this site free of ads. I do not want to block ads in general, and I shurely wont start to use any software for that. But every user of CAT-tools gets reminders of new versions, or can choose to be reminded.
I open the frontpage of proz.com dozens of time a day, that's why these banners are a nuisance.

Thanks for the feedback Apr 23, 2004

Thanks for this feedback. We will stay away from ads as large as the last one.

As for not showing ads at all to platinum members, that would be difficult. But giving people a way to opt out may be feasible.

Note that the policy we adopted very early was only to accept advertising that we believe would be useful to our members. We have turned away many advertisers in the past.

opt out Apr 27, 2004

I would welcome the possibility of opting out (not permanently, but just for the session), since from time to time I use a small screen laptop and/or a slow connection.
