This Forum is a wonderful idea! I'm living in the French part of Switzerland in the Canton of Valais which is actually bilingual (FRE/GER). Although I'm trying hard, Céline's French is far better than her German and when she speaks German, I can tell that she's translating (she keeps the french structure). We're sending her now to a bilingual nursery school and I hope this will improve her... See more

Dear Marcel,

It is all they knwo to do. Translate from one language to an other is all their brains can do since they do not have yet the sufficient information to devide the two structures (of the two different languages). This is the experts opinion too. They have to turn minimum six years old to start doin that, I mean understand and select one language different from the other.

Just give her some more time and you will be amaized.

Will it improve her German? Yes. I am assuming the child is under 5, she is still in the stage where she is still sorting the two languages into their proper categories in the brain. She may mix the languages, grammar, idioms for a while. (Not translating, this is too sophisticated at this age.) In some children categorizing takes longer, and in some environments it never happens, but in the environment you have her in she has the best chance to becoming fully bilingual.

The teachers in bilingual schooling are professionals (at least I hope they are in your case), they've been trained and know what they're doing. Beware though of a pre-school class headed by a teacher whose second language is weak. The kids sense this and will speak to the teacher in the teacher's dominant language. The best scenario is a class headed by two teachers, each one speaking their motherlanguage. If you can afford it.

Yes, fortunately in the bilingual school where I send my daughter, there are two teachers (one for each language, native speakers). The canton of Valais is actually the first canton in Switzerland which has introduced the bilingual school system, which means that the children will have a bilingual education from nursery school till college.
