I'm only commenting on English as the target language.
We've had a very noticeable and fairly sudden appearance of World Cup-related work (advertising) in our editing/proofing department (not quite so much in translation). What surprises me is that most of these texts in "English" given to us to pep up are obviously not from native speakers but by Germans (others) with good (what's the definition of good... What surprises me is that most of these texts in "English" given to us to pep up are obviously not from native speakers but by Germans (others) with good (what's the definition of good?) English. We used to mostly get tesxt in normal, unobtrusive (i.e. excellent) English which only needed a rare bit of tweaking. Admittedly, the end products CAN be equally good in both cases, but the fewer changes you as editor have to make, the less likely something will be overlooked (and the more room you have for inspiration).
I'd have thought that "language" in international advertising campaigns for such a huge global event would deserve better treatment. (Hey, it's Germany I'm talking about. And not only that, but it's THE event here in how many years?)

How is the presence of the World Cup on your countries?
Here in Argentina once every four years everything goes to stand-by. From public offices to schools. Fans see every single game in order to follow all teams position in the table.
I am reaching the point where I can't stand a single more advertisement with cheesy music and people screaming "¡Vamos, Argentina!". Every single advertisement is World Cup related.
But, on the bright side, every four years (or whenever Boca-River play) I get to go to the supermarket without having to wait on the line to pay!

I see the sarcasm in my post didn't come through -- for the record, I was raised in Spain surrounded by soccer mania
As for the World Series, every year I find myself asking someone what exactly is this World they are referring to...and I get in hot water just as quickly as I did here

Then the rest of the world also started to play those games, but the US could still find confort in the fact that, even so, they were so much better than the rest of the world that it didn't matter, that they were still world champs.

Then the rest of the world also started to play those games, but the US could still find confort in the fact that, even so, they were so much better than the rest of the world that it didn't matter, that they were still world champs.
Then the URSS beat the US basket team in an olymipc final (Montreal?), but the US said that it didn't count, that their best players didn't come, as they were the pros (they definitely had something there) and that, in any case, the game had been stolen (not unheard of at the olympics, but still, if they had managed to score more than a measly fifty points or so, bad refereeing wouldn't have mattered).
So they refused to participate in the medal cerimony.
When their amateur basketball players started to get beaten by other teams as well, after a while the US managed to send to Barcelona the "Dream Team", but what Larry Bird, Mike Jordan and Magic Johnson managed to do, lesser pros in subsequent years couldn't keep up - hence the recent humiliating losses for the US olympic pro team.
There still was baseball, though: they were the best of the world, there. And never mind that Cuba usually beat them at the olympics: they were not sending their pros, there (sounds familiar?).
So this year they did organize an even where the US pros participated... and didn't even get to the final.
But there is still American Football: they are the best of the world there, no mistake...

... my work is the same as ever, but my buddies keep telling me to hoard food and cash, as I won't be able to leave the house on the days of the games (what will I want the cash for, then? My buddies are not the greatest logicians in the world).
Oh well. I hope I can find some extra hard work to do for the four individual days I will be trapped inside a flat in downtown Dortmund (oh wait, that will be just like every other workday then ...)

Work from the World Cup? I'm a native English speaker living in Belgium? Why would any WC work travel this far?
I am prepared for the FWC however. I have a good supply of replacement batteries for my TV remote control, as I expect to be zapping past all the foosball for the duration.
