With school-age children, it's not that it's my favorite time (I never wondered about that), but it's the only time !
Last year I still had the last one at home so it was only late at night.

Many colleagues stay up all night if they have to finish a translation. I can't. No coffee or Coke help me to keep my eyes round. I need to go to bed early as I always do, 22.00 or 22.30. I only work at daytime (morning included) if I have to. Otherwise, it's a cup of steaming brew once the sun has set and let the inspiration flow. Where would I be without coffee, I don't know.

I usually wake up at 5 am and work until 9 pm. However, I prefer working in the morning to in the afternoon.

My most rpoductive hrs are the very early hours in the morning, from around 5 am.

That's exactly my favourite style too. Thank you for making my task easier Aurora. I couldn't have said it better. On many occasions, around 2 p.m or so I find that I have already done my share of the day. But I try my best not to miss my morning walk.
But sometimes I have to work against my nature also, mostly when the deadlines are tight and job is from agencies abroad. And in situations like what happened only once so far: A few days back a call from abroad(new agency)made me wake up at 1 a.m.!! The coordinator looked desperate and the deadline was too close. As I couldn't sleep immediately again, I decided to start the editing job and finished it by 4.oo a.m.
We shouldn't forget also that while established translators may be in a position to choose their favourite working hours, it may not be so with the beginners.

This has been a main problem of mine: I've never been a morning person (I envy you early birds), my working hours are 9 am to 5 pm. BUT I really translate at top speed between 4 pm and 6 pm, whipping out in those 2 hours as much as I can produce all morning.
Unfortunately, if I have to start dinner for my small family, it's usually at 5 pm, right smack in the middle of my peak productive time period.
What to do?
Right. Postpone dinner...

Whip up dinner in the morning when you are least productive - your family can take care of heating it up if they're hungry before you're done, and then nothing stops you when you're in your stride.
I understand your frustration - I work very well in the early, early morning, am pretty much useless in the early afternoon, and start kicking into gear again between 4 and 6, right when I have to go pick my kids up from daycare. Cooking midday is one of my ways of taking a break from the computer when my brain is blocked, and hopefully getting the creative juices flowing

I am totally indifferent - whenever I feel rested and active within the time budget. Mayby night, maybe morning, maybe afternoon after a catnap. When I must push myself real hard, a week of vacation always follows.

I'm definitely a night owl too, and do my most productive work after about 4pm. Although that's partly becuase by then I've dealt with all the enquiries and other emails, and can finally concentrate.
I usually go to teh gym/pool, do shopping and so on in the mornings (starting about 9am). That usually involves leisurely cups of coffee and a read of teh daily papers...no hurry:-) I'm lazy getting started in the mornings, need at least an hour to begin to feel awake.
I get home about 12, and deal with mails etc, as I cook and/or clean, then eat, watch 3pm news, sometimes have a siesta - all of which takes me up to about 4pm.
Then I really get down to work.
However, I recently decided that 2 or 3 days a week I will get up earlier/stay home mornings to get a good half day's work done, as sometimes the whole day is gone and I've done next to nothing.
