1. STAGES OF GRIEF
Grief must be understood. This principle is foundational for effective ministry to widows so that actions may be appropriate for the stage of grief being experienced by the widow/er. One does not have to be bereaved to understand grief. Although gaining an understanding of grief will not make the loss any more bearable for the bereaved, it will help them to develop healthy patterns for handling grief.
Many factors, such as age, temperament, family situation and many other conditions, determine how a person will experience grief. But all go through the stages which Haddon Robinson identifies in his work entitled Grief (1). Robinson identifies three basic categories of grief.
A. The crisis stage
The period, which lasts from the initial notification of the death of the loved one until the time of the funeral, consists of shock or surprise and usually ends with an emotional release such as weeping.
B. The crucible stage
Lasting for several weeks and possible months, this is a painful time when the grief sufferer must weaken and break the emotional ties with the past and every expectation for the future bound up with the person who has died.
C. The construction stage
The last period consists of the work of developing new patterns for living that are not emotionally tied to the past.

1. LAS ETAPAS DE DOLOR ANTE LA PÉRDIDA
En primer lugar se debe comprender el dolor que siente una persona al enviudar. Este es un principio fundamental para un ministerio efectivo a personas viudas, para que los pasos a seguir en el proceso de ayudarles y aconsejarles puedan ser los apropiados para cada etapa de dolor que experimentan. No hace falta haber perdido a un ser querido para poder reconocer que existe un dolor profundo. Aunque la comprensión del duelo de parte nuestra no hace más soportable el dolor del viudo, sin embargo podemos ayudarle a desarrollar conductas sanas para sobrellevarlo.
Muchos factores (tales como la edad, el temperamento de la persona y las características familiares) determinan la forma en que experimentará el duelo. Aunque no todas las personas viven cada etapa con la misma intensidad de dolor, todas atraviesan los estados que el autor Haddon Robinson identifica en su obra Duelo (1) que, esencialmente, se dividen en tres partes.
A. Etapa de crisis
Abarca desde el momento en que se recibe la noticia de la muerte del ser querido hasta el momento del entierro (2), y consiste en un período de shock o sorpresa que, en general, termina con una gran descarga emocional, como un intenso llanto, por ejemplo. Hay personas que no llegan a tener la descarga emocional sino hasta semanas o meses después del funeral. Estas personas siguen en la primera etapa.
B. Etapa de "crisol"
Un crisol es un recipiente en donde todo se mezcla y se funde a una presión y temperatura altas. Ésta es la etapa de mayor prueba y dura varias semanas o incluso meses. Es un período muy doloroso en el que la persona viuda debe debilitar y cortar los lazos emocionales que lo unen al pasado junto a su cónyuge, y toda expectativa o proyecto que lo unía a él o a ella. Todo se vive con mucha intensidad y la vida espiritual y emocional de esta persona es sometida a la mayor presión. Esta etapa suele durar alrededor de dos años, aunque hay personas que no salen de ella.
C. Etapa de construcción
El último período consiste en desarrollar una nueva forma de vida, nuevos hábitos y costumbres que no le estén atando emocionalmente al pasado, sino que le den libertad para asumir su propia realidad y poder proyectarse con vitalidad hacia el futuro con nuevas expectativas.
