Sometime during the night, it had stopped snowing.
The footprints leading to the tree had, by this time, almost been buried. In a little while the cold wind would drift more snow over them, obliterating them entirely.
The tree, standing alone in the soft-white waste, was a gray-barked rock maple.
It stood tall and stately, a lone sentinel etched sharply against the pale winter dawn. Its rich and brilliant autumn plumage has long gone, and now its branches were stark and bare; they groaned and cracked and moved fitfully in the bitter wind.
The body itself hung from a lower branch.
It was that of a young girl. She wore a shapeless monk's robe of gray cloth. The robe was unbelted, and it flopped open to reveal her thin, pathetic naked body. The monkish hood had slipped partially over her pinched face, twisted in its last death agony.
Her flesh had begun to turn blue now. Her body had the stiff, frozen look of some forgotten scarecrow. There was a sandal on her left foot, but her right foot was bare. At the moment of impact, the sudden jerk had caused the sandal to fall off, and it lay below, buried in the snow, only its tip showing.
The girl hung like some broken toy, her legs spread grotesquely. Tiny, obscene icicles had begun to form on the hairs in her crotch.
Tied to the branch, and twisted around her neck, was a braided rope. Its colour was green. Clearly, it was the belt that had held her robe, and it was this she used to hang herself.
Now and then, when the wind gusted, the body swayed gently and the rope creaked just a little, in sympathy with the naked branches above.

Тело девушки уже начало приобретать синеватый оттенок. Оно как будто затвердело, издали его можно было принять за невесть как сюда попавшее воронье пугало. Левая нога была обута в сандалий, на правой ничего не было. Наверное, когда петля затянулась, нога девушки дернулась в предсмертной судороге, и сандалий слетел. Его уже занесло, только кончик торчал из снега.
Девушка висела, как поломанная игрушка. Ноги нелепо раздвинулись, на лобковых волосах образовывались крошечные сосульки.
Веревка, стягивавшая ее шею, другим концом было привязана к ветке. Зеленая веревка, заплетенная в косу; очевидно, она служила поясом ее монашеского одеяния.
Время от времени тело слегка покачивалось на ветру. При трении о дерево веревка издавала тихий скрип, в такт обнаженным ветвям…

Почти сутки он не сводил глаз с монитора – и вот наконец-то в игре наступил перелом. Последним ходом удалось разменять трехкомнатную в блочном доме на две хорошие двухкомнатные – сработал полезнейший артефакт под названием «доплата». В одной из «двушек» не было телефона, зато другую можно было сразу апгрейдить до евроремонта. Его маклеры набрали нужную форму. Сарацин нашел на заброшенной стройке артефакт «антиочередь к начальнику ЖЭКа» и теперь посещал жилищно-эксплуатационные конторы одну за другой, отчего флажки над их крышами меняли цвет с синего на зеленый. Второй маклер, Сандро, с боем вышиб противника из ИТК (инженерно-технической конторы) и поставил у входа бойцовых пенсионерок, пять отрядов по двадцать монстров в каждом: ну-ка, вражий риeлтор, попробуй-ка заверить хоть один технический план! Итого – шестнадцать квартир, налажены связи с нотариальной конторой и газетой “Авизо”. В десяти квартирах – постояльцы, две – под офис, в четырех ремонт. Наконец-то накопились ресурсы для покупки того особняка с химерами… А вот когда он купит особняк и сдаст под офис шестикомнатную в центре… Он не сразу заметил, что его теребят за плечо.
– Что там еще?
– Пора.
Он скрипнул зубами. Сохранил игру; поднялся, не пытаясь скрыть раздражения. Опять из того прекрасного цветного мира – в эту тупую серую повседневность… И вышел на крыльцо. Рыцари привествовали его. Ветер играл боевыми штандартами, ржали закованные в броню кони, пахло железом и дымом, а над горизонтом поднималось неторопливое кровавое солнце. И он воздел над головой фамильный меч:
– Верные! Наш час настал! Пришло время постоять за дело Света, отбить отцовский замок у изменника брата…
Сохраненная на диске игра ждала своего часа…

He had been playing the game non-stop for almost twenty-four hours when the turning point finally came. It was his last move that did it – he managed to exchange a three-room flat in a tower block for two nice two-room ones. Trading up works wonders – talk about magic!... Admittedly, one of the flats did not have a phone – but the other could easily be upgraded to “luxury apartment”. His agents were getting the hang of things, too. Saracen found the “anti-queue” artifact on an abandoned construction site and was now using it on one housing office after another – he could see their banners change from blue to green on the game map. The other agent, Sandro, had just won a battle over the access to the planning department Five squadrons of little old ladies, twenty monsters in each, were now standing guard at the entrance. If the enemy thinks he is going to get any of his projects certified, he’d better think again!
Sum-total. Sixteen flats; a good friend in a property newspaper and another useful contact, a solicitor. Twelve of the flats are rented out – ten to tenants, two to businesses, and the other four are being refurbished. Ergo, he can finally afford that mansion with the gargoyles… and when he gets the mansion and rents out the six-room flat… to a business, of course…
Someone was shaking him by the shoulder. He now realised they had been there for quite a while.
– What is it now?
– It is time.
He gritted his teeth, clicked “Save and exit” and rose, not even trying to conceal his frustration. Goodbye, game, hello, reality. Out of the world of bright colours and vivid senses and into the dim, the dull and the mundane. Yet again.
He stepped out onto the porch, taking it all in: the hailing knights, the pennants streaming in the wind, the impatient whinny of armoured horses, the smell of bonfires and iron, heated by the bodies of men and their steeds, the sun rising leisurely overhead – bright red, the colour of blood.
He raised his father’s sword with a flourish.
– The time has come, my loyal men – time to stand up in the name of Light! Time to free the castle of my ancestors from the evil presence of my brother and his henchmen…
He thought of the saved game file sitting on his hard drive. Its time will come, too.
