Source text - English Preparing for battle is useless because the invading army is God’s instrument (2:11). God is using this terrible army as an instrument of punishment. It is part of God’s purpose just like the Assyrians and Babylonians were. Although this army cannot be resisted, it is possible to prepare for that day so that destruction can be avoided. The key is in 2:13 which calls for the people to “rend your heart and not your garment.” Outward actions are not good enough; there must be a change of heart. This is exactly what Jeremiah was talking about (31:33). In that verse, the topic is the New Covenant that God will make with His people. The context is the same as that in Joel. God is promising that those who truly turn to Him with their hearts will be part of something new. Destruction will not be avoided, but God will leave a “blessing behind him” for those who allow the judgement to refine them (2:14).

The Lion, Christ, must come from the tribe of Judah. The tribe and the royal line had to be preserved. We can look back in all of biblical history, even in the Garden of Eden and especially from Abraham onward, and see how the lineage of the Messiah was preserved. This judgement of the dividing up of the nation came upon Israel because they had forsaken the Lord and worshipped Ashtoreth, the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh, the god of the Moabites, and Molech, the god of the Ammonites.
(Note: ASHTORETH was the Canaanite goddess of fertility, love, and war. CHEMOSH (khee' mahsh) was the deity the Moabites worshipped (Num. 21:29). Solomon erected a sanctuary for Chemosh on a mountain east of Jerusalem (1 Kings 11:7). Josiah subsequently defiled the sanctuary (2 Kings 23:13). Jeremiah pronounced doom on Chemosh and his people (Jer. 48:7, 13, 46).
“Molech” is the name of a pagan deity to whom human sacrifices were made. This deity often is associated with Ammon (compare 1 Kings 11:7 and 2 Kings 23:13). Leviticus 20:5 condemns those who are prostituting themselves to Molech. No wonder the Lord God pronounced judgement on Israel for idolatry.
