HELP!!! For some reason I can't clean up my translated documents!
It's microsoft word documents, but every time I try to clean them up, Trados tells me, that it can't process rtf. Although the documents aren't even rtf!!!
I'm using the latest Trados version, just bought it a month ago.
I appreciate your help!

More detailed info, please Sep 15, 2008

Hi Maria,
Please help others to help yourself by providing more detailed information.

- Which version exactly are using (please quote the full version number)?
- Are you translating RTF files in Word or in TagEditor?
- Which Word version are you using?
- Are the files 'normal' RTF files, or were they extracted from another application (e.g. help files, DTP exports, ...)?

What application says that, and when? Is this the full error message?

If you're working in Word, have you tried cleaning up using the Tw4WinClean.Main macro?

Best regards,
Ralf

Actually I have no idea how to answer most of your questions. When I start Trados it says Trados 2007. My Word programm is pretty old.
I'm translating in word, not rtf. In the TM, I select "Clean up" in "Tools". Then I add the file that I want cleaned. At the bottom of the window it then says "Converting DOC-RTF", which I don't know why it does that, because then it says it can't process rtf, also there at the bottom of the window.

I tried to convert it into rtf and translate it from there, then clean it up. That actually worked, but it made the files so big, that I have to convert them back into .doc. When I do that, the whole formatting is messed up.

It would be great if anybody could help me! I'm desasperating!

Oh, and I have never heard of Tw4WinClean.Main and can't find it on my computer either. What is that?

tnx!!!

Hi, María,

Have a look at this article from the SDL Knowledge Base:

I hope it helps!

Details Sep 15, 2008

Hi again,

Actually I have no idea how to answer most of your questions.

Let's try to find some more details.

When I start Trados it says Trados 2007.

That's Trados version 8.x - if you look at Help - About... in the Workbench application window, you can see the exact version. (In fact, this is where you find the version info for pretty much every Windows-based software.)

My Word programm is pretty old.

Again, please have a look under Help (or "?") - About... .

I'm translating in word, not rtf.

Certainly - "RTF" is not an application, but a format ("Rich Text Format"). In fact, Trados uses RTF to interface with Word.

In the TM, I select "Clean up" in "Tools". Then I add the file that I want cleaned. At the bottom of the window it then says "Converting DOC-RTF", which I don't know why it does that, because then it says it can't process rtf, also there at the bottom of the window.

Trados needs to convert the .doc file into RTF to run the cleanup process - the message indicates that this conversion fails. This may have numerous causes.

I tried to convert it into rtf and translate it from there, then clean it up.

That actually worked, but it made the files so big, that I have to convert them back into .doc. When I do that, the whole formatting is messed up.

The increase in file size is normal, particularly if the document contains graphics.

Oh, and I have never heard of Tw4WinClean.Main and can't find it on my computer either. What is that?

It's a Word macro installed with Trados, which allows you to 'manually' force cleanup - please use the forum search to find more details (this has been discussed on numerous occasions).

Looks like you can use the macro to clean up the Word file (hopefully without any formatting issues), and the normal cleanup process to clean the RTF copy (to update your TM).

HTH, Ralf

Hello Maria,

The Workbench batch processing of large and complex Word documents may under some circumstances produce the error (352550032): Can't process RTF format.

This error is typically caused by specific problems in the document, a main one being unresolved tracked changes. These problems can be addressed by following these steps:

1. Open the .doc file in Microsoft Word and save it as an RTF file (choose Rich Text Format from the “Save As Type” list in the Save As dialog box).
2. Re-open the RTF file. Find the Accept changes drop-down button on Word's Reviewing toolbar and choose Accept all changes.
3. Sometimes it is necessary to accept changes individually. It is especially helpful when changes are located in the header or footer of the document. Position your cursor at the top of the file and click on Next and Accept Change buttons until no more changes are found.
4. If necessary, disable the Track Changes function in Word's Tools menu.
5. Keep the file as RTF and process it through Clean-Up in Translator's Workbench, or save the file back as a .doc file.

The file should now go through batch processes with no errors.

I hope this helps.

Many Thanks,

Gareth Powell

Hello SDL Support Sep 29, 2008

Hello,

I am facing exactly the same problem like Maria. I had an index table and I thought that would be the problem, I updated that and tried again. It keeps giving me the same error! I use Trados 2007, the file is really big and I am doing the first half of it. It has a lot of graphics and I only wondering what the problem can be.

Can you please give me a hint / help?

Many thanks, Fabiana

Of course, it is not mine to tell you what you should do but from what you say, your situation is a model one in which TagEditor processing is preferable.

Many users "overstretch" Word by using it as a DTP tool, which it is not; IMHO, in such instances the Workbench/Word combination is not suitable at all.

Antonin
